Mapleton, to the untrained eye, appears to be an unassuming village with a simple, laid back atmosphere. However on the weekends, particularly on Sunday, it attracts a whole new type of clientele. Don't get me wrong, we are not talking about unsavoury types at all. Many times we have been driving or, more often, walking around the area and find an entire fleet of motorbikes backed into the curb in front of the Mapleton pub where they are enjoying a drink or a meal overlooking the entire Sunshine coast (that is the view you actually do get from the pub's verandah). These bikes are usually high powered road bikes not unlike the ones that the moto GP riders use. The well-to-do people of the 'Sunny coast' use Mapleton as a stop off point on their Sunday rides or drives especially as the road up to here is windy and steep and perfect for some serious road slalem for those who like that sort of thing. For others, it is just a nice ride amongst the green hills and rainforest.
On the most recent Sunday, we were heading out for our bushwalk when we passed 3 Lamborghinis parked across from the cafe and pizza place just off the main street. They were canary yellow, bright orange and silver, all with trader plates. Steve burst into song with "my maserati does 185, I lost my licence and now I don't drive". I'm not sure exactly where he picked up that song but he felt compelled to share it with us in the car. These cars had attracted a small crowd with people casually standing next to them for photographs. The drivers would not have been far away and were obviously not too perturbed by people photographing the vehicles. We've also seen Ferraris and Porsches since we've been here. So humble little Mapleton becomes the hang out of choice for the rich or 'want to be' rich on weekends and why not! The greatest thing about it is that we live in a caravan and we get to enjoy it every day yet when others have choices, they choose to stop at Mapleton.
